Inspiration Board - Feel of the wedding

Wow seems like I am becoming the new blogger on here. ;) Recently became a member of OffBeat Bride, a online community for "the taffeta free bride". Well the smart ladies on there create what they call inspiration boards. Its basically a way for you to put pictures together to show other people what your vision for things are. A little while ago I created my first one that gave a general feel for the wedding. I am sure over the next few weeks I will make many more for attire, decor, ect. But for now here is my first one:

We got kind of busy over the holidays but I was lucky enough to have 2 weeks off while Chris was working. I was trying to update our current pre-made website and the functionality just was not cutting it. So I put my web development skills to work and created this:

It still needs some work (like a background and actual photos instead of blank ones) but the basics page template is now there. I will start adding in text and creating pages soon. Hope to have this up and running in a few weeks. *crossing fingers*

Wedding Budget

Carla has made some cool monograms for our invitations and programs, but we still have not decided on which one(s) we want to use. I think these ones have already undergone changes to the text to make them easier to read and stand out more.

Trash the Dress Video

Sol and Matt of Del Sol have just posted a couple of videos and new pictures on their blog and website. The video shows a Trash the Dress session they just did recently during their return to the Riviera Maya. There's also a cool video of Matt and Sol swimming with a whale shark they saw in Caribbean on August 1st.

The Wedding Cake's Origins

I posted the picture of the wedding cake we want to recreate/modify in an earlier post, but I found the cake's origins! Before I just stumbled (literally, stumbled via StumbleUpon) a picture of the cake, but this is the couple who had the good taste to have the cake created for their wedding:

Check out that wedding announcement! I don't know if they sent that out or not, but it's damn cool. David is a writer, filmmaker and comic strip artist and Nikki is a photographer and special-effects artist.

Check out that suit of armor cake displayed on the homepage. Holy cow.

Unfortunately I cannot link any particular pictures from his gallery or pull them off the site to post here, but I definitely suggest looking through his gallery. Go and see these:

Believe-it-or-not, his pricing isn't bad. The base price is $2.30 per serving, includes plate, first set of legs, smooth-butter cream finish and appropriate borders. That's for 1-100 servings, which ours would be. I'd imagine we'd get 30-ish servings. Unless we wait for cake at the Michigan reception, in which case it would drop to $2.10 per servings for 101-300 servings.

They can ship there cakes anywhere in the U.S. and it's done counter-to-counter by major airline. You pick the cake up at the airport. I imagine this would become costly, but could be 100% worth it.

We'll look around, but I think I'll contact Mike's Amazing Cakes for a quote and see just what the cost might be for a smaller version of David and Nikki's cake would cost with a Mexican/Indiana Jones-like/action-adventure/jungle theme would be.

P.S.: In case you were curious how the top layer of the cake sat so well at an angle supported only by 2.5 legs - It's Styrofoam.

P.P.S.: Carla is trying to veto my Indiana Jones ideas for a groom with a Fedora hat. But don't worry, I'm fighting it to the end and there's always the groom's cake.

The Wedding Cake

Behold the best wedding cake I have ever seen. Believe it or not we are going to attempt to reproduce this for the reception party back home in Michigan.

With two exceptions:

1. The groom will be Indiana Jones with whip
2. The bride will be Princess Leia

Sure, I could compromise and make the groom Han Solo, but the opportunity to mix crazy Indy villains and Stormtroopers would be a whole lot funnier than straight Stormtroopers. I mean, really, really funny.

We will keep the plane. "Lao Che" will, of course, be written on the side.

There may be spaceships.

Update: Carla says she doesn't want to be Princess Leia and she wants me to just be a groom with a Fedora. Nay, I say. I already found the perfect sized Indy figurine with whip and revolver in hand.

My Sexy Suit and Hat

I think this suit will be mine. The color is most likely the color we're looking for. It's harder than it looks to find a "sand" or tan color that does not look brown and does not look yellow.

I also believe it is generally understood that I'm using this occasion as the perfect reason to finally buy the hat I have always wanted. My choice in headgear has made many an old man look at me twice while they wonder if I stole their hat or not.

To reinforce the idea that, yes, I would like to look my head lives in the '50s I will be wearing a hat (color matched to the suit, of course) similar to the ones below.

I introduce you to the classic "Bogey" that you may recognize from just about any old movie and to a hat very near-and-dear to me, the Fedora.
Then again, it would feel wrong to wear a tan Fedora. What about a different route?

At least Belloq knew how to look good in the desert.

Candy Buffets & Flip-Flops

Carla found these flip-flop sandals and they're pretty cool. Fun accessory for the bride. We would just need to find them.

For the return party we want to do a candy buffet. I've heard of candy buffets at a lot of weddings, but it seemed like a nifty idea. Seeing as I proposed on Mackinac Island, what better way to bring a little bit of that into the celebration than having real Murdick's Mackinac Island fudge shipped in?

The fudge shops on Mackinac Island and in Mackinaw City make some of the best fudge you'll ever eat. They also make quite a few different flavors and sell them in 1-pound slices. I thought it would be a neat idea to order a wide variety and lay it out on a table for the guests. Carla agreed and added that we should then bring back a bunch of Mexican candy to fill in the rest.

Sounds like a hell of a buffet to me. I can't wait to see it.

Colors

I think we've decided on the colors. We still need to get some fabric samples and see which one of the 1-billion different shades for each color look the best, but we're thinking sand/tan, tangerine orange and a shade of pink.

The picture gives a pretty good example. Imagine those colors on a sandy beach-like color and you get the idea. Carla wants to do something along the lines of a flower petal path, too. The petals would look similar to this second picture. Same color scheme.

The petals would be on sand or possibly on grass. That would all depend on where we decide to have the actual ceremony. No matter what it's almost guaranteed to be very close to a beach, water and jungle. So we'll have a bit of everything.

Photographer and Location Have Been Decided

We talked last night and decided we definitely want to have the wedding ceremony in the Riviera Maya. It's the area of Mexico mostly known for Cancun and Playa Del Carmen, but it's also a very beautiful place covered in jungle and other great places for weddings.

This also allows us to (hopefully) work with Sol Tamargo as our wedding photographer. You can see a link to her website under the links sections here. She does absolutely awesome work and she also does a little thing called Trash The Dress.

We hope to be able to schedule everything so that we can possibly do a Trash The Dress right after the ceremony or maybe the next day. You really need to look at the pictures on her website to fully understand why you would do this because it's exactly like it sounds. We'll go on a tour of beaches and cenotes (underground caves with beautiful pools) and we'll swim around in our wedding attire and have pictures taken. It should be a ton of fun and the pictures will be beautiful.

Now we just need to work out the budget to allow us to pay Sol and, of course, pay for the ceremony and resort in the Riviera Maya.
